ROTA 12
Bird Island

It is a small island located at the southern end of Cape Madoc.
You can enjoy the view from the observatory. Standing at the observatory, you can see the gently curved coast and Bird Island in front of it at a glance.

This limestone island is characterized by many small holes suitable for birds to nest.

Because of this, numerous birds gather around the island at sunset, creating a spectacular sight. The shape of the waves crashing into the coastline around the island resembles the flapping of a bird’s wings, so it is called ‘Bird Island’.

The natives here call the island ‘Turtle Rock’ because the island is shaped like a turtle crouching towards the land, and consider turtles a symbol of good luck.

Grotto

It is the best diving site in Saipan and is a place that divers from all over the world want to visit. After going down the 117 steep and slippery stairs, you will come to a small cave.

Just by looking at the blue water peeking through the oysters, you can see why this place is so loved. The beautiful color of the water, which is difficult to describe in words, fills the cave with mystery.

When you go into the water, there are three tunnels, and when sunlight pours through them, you can see the fantastic color of the water. Snorkeling is also possible.

Kalabera Cave

If you drive down the dirt road south of Bird Island into the jungle, you will come across Calavera Cave, one of Saipan’s historically significant sites.

It is said that it was used as a prison for Chamorro people during the Spanish rule and as a field hospital during war, and the skeletons of Chamorro people and Japanese people were also discovered.

The entrance is 10 meters high, but inside there is a space that is twice that height.
